Cleaning & Care

You have invested in a pair of top-quality, custom handmade leather boots.

These will give you a great many years of comfortable service but as with all things made from leather they require a certain amount of care and attention. Here are some tips for keeping your boots looking their best. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us.

Full Grain Smooth Calf Hides
One of the most important things to remember with leather is allowing it to dry naturally when wet, not placing the boots next to a heat source just place them or hang them in a normal warm environment. A wipe over with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or impurities then you can start caring for the leather with a quality shoe/boot polish (we recommend Avel's Saphir range of products).

Apply the polish with either a dry cloth or small applicator brush designed for the purpose. Apply using circular movements. After covering the whole of the uppers of the boot set aside and leave to dry. The initial finishing should be carried out with a good polishing brush; this will restore the leathers shine. The final finishing is best achieved using a soft polishing cloth in 100% natural cotton.

Suede/Nubuck
Prior to leaving our workshop your suede boots are brushed and treated with a special water repellent suede finisher. This is something you should do yourself on a regular basis, at least twice a year, to protect the leather.

If your suede boots become wet, leave them to dry naturally overnight - away from a heat source. When they are dry, use a suede brush to lift the pile. For difficult-to-remove marks use a suede block. Again, retreat the leather on a regular bases with a good protector spray (please ensure it is good color match)

Patent Leather
When your patent leather boots are finished in our workshop they are cleaned with a special cleaning agent. Patent leather care is not at all the same as for normal smooth or suede leather. To clean patent boots firstly wipe them over with a damp, but not wet, chamois leather to remove dust or dirt. Then use a special patent leather care product such as Saphir Vernis Rife. Apply it, then leave it on the boot. After five minutes or so a white film will form on the surface of the leather. When this has formed take a cotton chamois and buff to a high shine.
